The Cornell Lab of Ornithology's All About Birds is a great searchable database on all the birds of North America. Very user friendly. Find information on life history, identification, behavior and more.
Another great source for bird information on the web is the Audubon Society. Especially check out their online bird ID guide which includes tips on how to bird (If link isn't working, copy and paste birds.audubon.org/birdid into your browser).
