Officially known as the Corps of Discovery, the Lewis and Clark expedition ventured through western Montana and north-central Idaho in the summer and fall of 1805 on their journey to the Pacific. They returned through the same area in the summer of 1806. Lewis and Clark faced their toughest challenge crossing the Bitterroot mountains in September 1805. If not for the kindness of the Nez Perce, the whole expedition likely would have met an inglorious end. ROW is fortunate to have many sections of their route in close proximity to several operations. The Missouri, RDL/Lochsa and Middle Fork of the Salmon include parts of their route. There are countless resources on the expedition, some of which are listed in the ROW Bibliography. Here are a couple more:
Lewis and Clark Amongst the Tribes - An Idaho Public Television documentary that explores Lewis and Clark through the eyes of Native American tribes in Idaho. Most of their journey and the results have been filtered through the Lewis and Clark journals and the lens of European-American historians.
